Why I’m Doing a Bone Broth Cleanse

Sometimes you're trucking along feeling great, happy with the healing your body has accomplished over the past few years… then something changes.

You wake up feeling a little off.

Life stressors start to take hold.

Your body begins to rebel.

But in fact, you know it's not truly rebelling, your body is trying to tell you something.

If nothing else, over the years of dealing with a chronic health issue, I've learned that my body is not always working against me (as I once thought) but rather alerting me to changes that need to be made.

It's warning me to stop barreling toward the cliff and turn around.

If you live with a chronic illness, you understand the reality of facing flare-ups from time to time. It's a very frustrating thing and sometimes quite anxiety-inducing, truth be told.

All that to say… this morning I woke up feeling terrible!

I hoped on the scale and realized I'd gained 8 pounds in the past three weeks. This only happens when I'm in a flare-up. I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry.

I can feel the inflammation all over my body. As soon as I'm awake, I feel it.

From head to toe.

It's not fun.

So, what's a girl to do? 

First of all, I'm launching into a Broth cleanse.

Some people choose to do a broth cleanse with only broth, but the particular broth cleanse I'm planning to do includes some food (only fruits, vegetables, and meats). The reason I choose this cleanse is because having the option to eat food will lower my stress level and be easier on my body and mind.

The basic idea is to consume 40 ounces of bone broth a day, plus whole foods as needed. Foods should be good fats, pastured meats, and organic vegetables when possible.

During this broth fast avoid inflammatory foods like dairy, grains, and sugar.

The plan I'm following is from the book, 7 Day Bone Broth Diet Plan. It's written by the founder of  (the kindle version is only 99 cents!). It comes with recipes and instructions.

Important note: It's very difficult to find decent broth at the local grocery store. Most packaged broth contains sugar and other additives. It is not gut-healing or medicinal.

You can make your own bone broth, or purchase high-quality pre-made broth online (and at some health food stores).

You probably already know the many benefits of bone broth, but here is a quick refresher:

Besides the broth cleanse, I'm also  incorporating: 

  1. Extra Rest
    Getting enough sleep is vital to healing. I'm making an extra effort to go to bed early and sleep a little more.Besides sleep, I'm taking time to sit down and drink a cup of herbal tea in the afternoon.
  2. Gentle Movement
    It's not the time for HITT workouts or marathon training. Daily walking, stretching, and some pilates is what's on my agenda.
  3. Enough Water

  4. Therapeutic Baths
