This homemade eye treatment combines nourishing rosehip seed oil with the powerful hydrating properties of Manuka honey to create a soothing and moisturizing balm that's perfect for the delicate skin around the eyes.

My goal is not to keep my face completely wrinkle-free, but I do want to take good care of my skin so I can look and feel my best as I age. (Side note: I quite like eye wrinkles and find them to bring a lot of character to the face, but I still want to hydrate and moisturize that area for optimal skin health).

Many high-quality, all-natural eye treatments available at the store or beauty counter are quite expensive, but this homemade version is affordable and easy to make.

About the ingredients

Before we get to the recipe, let’s talk a quick look at each ingredient:

Rosehip seed oil

Well-loved for use in anti-aging skincare products, rosehip seed oil is considered a “dry oil” which means it absorbs very quickly into the skin. It is high in vitamin A and C and contains Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Is often used in eye creams and facial serums.

Avocado Oil

Suitable for dry skin or skin that is in need of repair. Works well in facial serums, body scrubs, and butters. Makes a great base oil.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba is actually a wax, but is used as an oil. It absorbs quickly into the skin and has little to no scent. It's perfect for use in products for the face and body.

Manuka honey

Honey lends it hydrating abilities to this eye treatment. Since it is a humectant, honey draws moisture from to the skin, which helps the skin stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is an important part of keeping skin healthy and minimizing wrinkles.

Why Manuka?
Honey, in general, is known to have antibacterial and antibiotic qualities. This is due to the naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide. Unfortunately, these properties are fairly short lived when used internally or externally as the body’s natural defenses convert the hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen by an enzyme called catalase. However, Manuka honey has additional non-peroxide activity (NPA) which comes from an organic compound called methylglyoxal (MGO) and two others, dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) .

The anti-inflammatory nature of Manuka honey makes it especially useful in this eye treatment as many of us experience puffiness and inflammation around the eyes. The antibacterial properties of Manuka can also be helpful if you are dealing with any type of breakout.

Beeswax

Beeswax is used to thicken and solidify the either ingredients. That said, beeswax also helps to soften skin as well as provide a protective layer.

Moisturizing Eye Treatment Recipe

Makes 1-ounce

Ingredients

  • 1.5 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 2  tablespoons jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon rosehip seed oil
  • 1 tablespoons beeswax
  • 3/4 teaspoon Manuka honey

Directions

Place avocado oil, jojoba oil, and beeswax in the top of a double boiler and warm over low heat until beeswax is melted.

Once beeswax has melted, remove from heat and set aside to cool briefly.

Add manuka honey and stir to combine. Stir continually for at least 60 seconds to ensure honey incorporates completely.

Once the honey and oils have sufficiently combined, add the rosehip seed oil and stir once again to distribute evenly.

Stir intermittently as the mixture cools and sets.

Pour into a glass jar and close tightly with lid.

Because honey is technically a “water-based” product, the shelf life of this eye treatment is shorter than oil-based only products. It should last around 8-12 weeks.

To apply this eye treatment, gently dab around the eyes and massage into skin with a light touch. Be sure not to get in the eyes.
