Some of you have asked what books I might recommend to help you learn more about essential oils.

Today I'd like to share with you the books I use.

These books are quite comprehensive and I don't expect you would need much more than what they have to offer. With that said, I'm certain there are other great books out there that I don't know about yet.

Before I share my favorites, I want to mention that it is important to consider what it is about essential oils that you actually want to learn.

If you are interested in knowing how to use essential oils as herbal remedies, you might need different books than someone who simply wants to know how to make green cleaning products with essential oils.

The Complete Aromatherapy and Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness by Nerys Purchon and Lora Cantele is packed full of information and practical solutions. It's one of my favorites and is referred to often.

The book that first peaked my interest in essential oils was one about natural cleaning: The Naturally Clean Home

The Naturally Clean Home has over 150 recipes for DIY cleaning products and many of them include essential oils. It also provides a great list of essential oils and shows which ones are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-biotic and so on.

After reading this book, I purchased Organic Body care recipes:

Organic Body care recipes uses many essential oils in the recipes (not all recipes include essential oils, and it doesn't provide a lot of information about essential oils).

The combination of these two books and my lack of access to essential oils finally pushed me to buy some. After getting started with essential oils, I have not looked back!

The following books provide more information about how to use essential oils to treat various ailments:

The Complete Book of Essential Oils by Valerie Ann Worwood

This book contains lots and lots of information. It covers the basics and also goes into more advanced uses of essential oils.

It covers topics such as:

  • how to create a basic care kit
  • how to create a travel kit
  • using oils at home and at the office
  • using essential oils to treat sports injuries
  • using essential oils in natural skin care
  • body care
  • hair care
  • using essential oils with babies
  • women's special concerns
  • men's special concerns
  • aging
  • celebrations
  • cooking with essential oils
  • using essential oils with animals
  • gardening

See what I mean? There's a lot on this book!

Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child, also by Valerie Ann Worwood is very practical.

It contains more than 300 natural, non-toxic, and fragrant essential oil blends.

My favorite part of this book is the A-Z of Conditions section. It lists various childhood ailments in alphabetical order, including the symptoms for each. It then provides a list of suggested treatments with specific instructions.

If you want to use essential oils to treat illness in children, then I recommend this book. It is extremely thorough and provides more information for childhood specific uses of essential oils than any other book I have seen.

The Essential Oils Handbook: All the Oils You Will Ever Need for Health, Vitality and Well-Being by Jennie Harding

I was surprised when this book arrived since it is almost pocket-sized. By pocket-sized I really mean short. It is very thick and probably wouldn't fit into your pocket, but it's not a regular looking book at all. I like it because I can keep it in the cabinet with my essential oils for easy reference.

The Essential Oils Handbook is also quite comprehensive as it provides information for many essential oils and details on how to use them.

This book explains how essential oils are produced and how to buy and store them. It also describes which carrier oils are best to use.

In part two: a guide to oils, essential oils are grouped together in sections according to their most potent properties.

The oils are grouped as follows:

  • Muscle Treats
  • Skin Enhancers
  • Easy Breathers
  • Warming Stimulants
  • Immune Boosters
  • Hormone Harmonizers
  • Nerve Relievers
  • Digestive Soothers
  • Uplifting Aromas

I like this method of diving the oils into groups since it makes it easy to locate the right oil to treat your particular ailment or desired use.
