Want to switch to a natural laundry routine?

It’s a great move to make considering the toxins found in many laundry products today.

Laundry soap, fabric softener, and dryer sheets, are exposing us to a host of chemicals that stay on our clothes and some transfer to our skin (which we know absorbs all kinds of things – so we’re dealing with some of this stuff getting into our bloodstream, not to mention what we're also breathing it in.)

I don’t like to harp on the bad, but before I move on to the good, I would be remiss not to mention that so many companies take part in greenwashing to fool us into believing their products are natural and non-toxic when they are far from it. Many laundry products fall into this category.

This is frustrating because it means we need to examine product claims and ingredients to see if they are truly what they claim to be. Which is not only time-consuming, it can also be confusing.

Thankfully, there are companies who pride themselves on being honest, transparent, and careful. (I'll be introducing you to one such company today).

Non-Toxic Laundry Doesn't Have to Be Difficult or Compliacted

There's no need for a natural, non-toxic laundry routine to be complicated or full of chemicals. In fact, a few simple organic, natural items can take care of just about all your laundry needs.

The great thing is, you can get all of the important non-toxic laundry items from a wonderful family company: Buckaroo Organics

Buckaroo Organics sent me some of their laundry itmes to try and I am excited to share them with you.

The following three items make a great foundation for a natural laundry routine:

Soapberry Suds

This is your easy switch for laundry detergent.

Soapberry Suds is a powdered laundry soap, made with certified organic soapberries (also known as soapnuts).

The soapberry not only cleans but helps to soften fabric too (so you won’t need fabric softener). It is compatible with HE and Standard Machines and is safe for septic systems too.

The ingredients in Soapberry Suds are:

Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Percarbonate, Sapindus Mukorossi (organic soapberry), Sodium Bicarbonate

These ingredients are organic and natural, plus they are hypoallergenic, making this laundry soap perfect for those with sensitive skin and safe for the entire family, including babies (no need to buy “baby laundry soap”).

Soapberry Suds are also safe for the environment and do not pollute water ways.

What are soapberries/soapnuts?

Even though they are called soapnuts, they aren't nuts at all, but rather dried shells of the soapberry (which actually grows on a tree).

They look like this:

Soap nuts contain saponin which is a cleaning agent that works like soap and detergent, but it’s 100% natural!

Buckaroo combines ground soapnuts with other ingredients to create a natural laundry soap that works!

The Soapberry Suds look like this:

You only need 1 scoop for regular washing machines and 1/2 scoop for HE machines. These works well for handwashing delicates and cloth diaper care too.

Wool Dryer Balls

Wool dryer balls are a wonderful alternative to dryer sheets! They soften laundry and reduce drying time and static.

I've made my own dryer balls in the past (just for fun, it doesn't really save any money to DIY it!), but purchasing them is super easy and quite inexpensive.

Dryer sheets are a major source of chemical exposure which can disrupt hormones and cause skin irritation.

In fact, dryer sheets are one fo the first things I suggest pitching when switching to a non-toxic lifestyle. They contain all kinds of chemicals that don't need to be on your clothes (or skin).

Dryer balls are super easy to use;  just throw them in the dryer along with wet clothes when starting the dryer.

If you miss the fragrance of dryer sheets, try adding a few drops of essential oil to dryer balls, then toss in the dryer AFTER clothes are dry, then fluff for a few minutes.

I used to add a few drops of essential oil to a dryer ball at the beginning of the dryer cycle, but found it didn't give much fragrance. Buckaroo suggested adding the essential oil to the dryer balls AFTER the clothes are dry, which is much better.

Essential Oils

Buckaroo also sells organic essential oils. The ones pictured below are peppermint, orange, and lemon.

These three essential oils are lovely scents to add to clothing and sheets are drying (just add a few drops to dryer balls as described above).

Peppermint, orange, and lemon essential oils are also great for many homemade cleaning products.

Here are a few posts ont he blog that cover cleaning products and natural body care products you can make with peppermint, orange, and lemon essential oils:
