Quick and Easy DIY Chocolate Lip Balm
This homemade vegan chocolate lip balm is simple to make and tastes delicious! It uses all-natural ingredients and is great for softening and smoothing lips.
Besides the fact that this recipe includes only three ingredients, you'll be happy to know that if you keep a stash on simple DIY body care supplies on hand, you'll likely have them in your cupboard already. Plus, one ingredients is actually a food item that's found in most pantries (unless you've eaten them already): chocolate chips.
Homemade skincare doesn't get much easier than this!
Let's take a quick look at the ingredients:
Cocoa butter is the base of this recipe as it is highly emollient and excellent as soothing and softening the skin. Besides it's skin-soothing benefits, cocoa butter provides a delightful chocolate scent and flavor. It also contributes to the hardness/firmness of the lip balm, and helps it hold together. Since we are not using beeswax in order to keep this a vegan product, this contribution of firmness and a solid consistency is very important.
Babassu oil or coconut oil can be used interchangeably in this lip balm recipe. Both provide moisturizing power as well as brining a little ‘gloss.' The consistency of these two oils helps make the lip balm soft and spreadable. Babassu can be used in place of coconut oil in most skin care recipes and is an excellent substitute for those who are allergic or sensitive to coconut oil.

Chocolate chips provide a chocolate flavor and also tint the lip balm a light brown, which helps indicate that it is chocolate in nature. Use fewer chocolate chips for a lighter flavor and color, and more for a darker color and stronger chocolate taste.
Peppermint essential oil is optional in this recipe, but pairs beautifully with chocolate (as well as provides a light tingly, refreshing sensation on the lips). Chocolate and peppermint is one of my favorite combinations, in scent and flavor! You can see it in action in my favorite chocolate peppermint lotion bar tutorial and also in this delicious mint-infused chocolate truffle recipe.
